Most golfers enjoy the camaraderie of playing a round with a few friends & occasionally taking part in a club competition & the one thing the majority of golfers, good or bad, have in common is also spending quite a bit of time honing their skills at a driving range or on a practice green. Some golfers also watch video’s of professionals practicing to get tips on swing, putting or driving; however nothing beats actually getting outside to physically practice. Every golfer wants to be better!
We’ve been lucky enough to watch many professional and championship golfers practice, as well as numerous recreational golfers, and we can tell you that there’s a big difference!
First and foremost, professional golfers tend to pace themselves when practicing. Rather than quickly hitting through 100 balls with a driver for example, they’ll do 50 and focus on the rhythm of the swing and connection with the ball rather than on the length of travel. When they are focussing on distance, it’s not always about hitting the ball as far as possible. Often they’ll bring the balls up slightly shorter or longer than maximum, replicating the length of different holes.
Professional golfers will also practice with a variety of different clubs. They might spend 30 minutes straight just using a wedge, then follow it up with a driver, then again with 9 iron. All the while, the focus is still mainly on connection and rhythm, then moving on to distance.
There’s no denying that a huge part of the game is in the putting and an essential skill for any golfer to hone. One that often causes the most frustrations!
