How To Get Started With Golf This New Year With A Huxley Golf Putting Green

Is one of your New Year’s goals or resolutions to take up Golf as a hobby? Or perhaps, you have a bit more experience and want to improve your golf this year? This blog has everything you need to get started with golf, whether you are a golf beginner, or want to brush up on the basics.

Why play golf?

Golf is a rewarding sport that is accessible for many. Some of its benefits include making you fitter and more active as it is a largely outdoors game. It can also be a very social game, perfect for couples or friends wanting to spend quality time together. Furthermore whether you’re on the competitive side, or just want to play for fun, golf enables you to challenge yourself - whether that’s to set a new personal record or to practise a new technique or trial out a different playing surface. In other words, golf is exciting because the opportunities in it are endless! If we’ve got you curious about getting started with golf or improving your basic knowledge, read on to find out how to get started with golf.

How to get started with golf.

Whether you’re a beginner or have some initial experience, we’ve made a simple guide how to get started with golf in just a few steps below.

  • What equipment do you need?

You only need a few golf clubs in your kit. Although you’re allowed to bring a maximum of 14 clubs on the golf course, you may only use 6-8 per round. For beginners, we recommend your kit of clubs to include 1 driver, 1 fairway wood, 1 hybrid club and irons. Your kit should also include a putter and a golf bag.

  • How to practice in your own time

We recommend all golf beginners to start off with a practice golf mat to practice hitting off a mat. At Huxley Golf we have a wide range of Huxley Golf Driving Range Golf Mats that can be used for all weather practice, recommended by many tour players for home practice.

We also recommend developing your home practice by investing in a Huxley Golf all-weather putting green. These home practice putting greens mimic natural golf surfaces and require virtually no maintenance and look just like real grass - so you’ll have a great new feature in your garden whilst also developing your golf skills.

You can use your driving range or golf green to practise shots in the comfort of your own home on your own schedule.

  • How to develop your golf game

Once you’re confident with a few basic techniques, we recommend joining your local golf club where you’ll have access to lots of facilities to help you improve, as well as get the opportunity to meet others and play in local tournaments if interested.

Now that you’ve read up on the basics of getting started with golf, this is your cue to go out there and take action. Whether you’re umming and arring about taking the leap and sign up to a golf member’s club, or whether you’ve never hit a ball in your life - it’s not too late to get started. You’ll be glad that you’ve taken that next step to becoming a fully fledged golfer.

In summary, golf is a great sport to take up because of its many benefits including improving physical and mental fitness. Nevertheless it’s a game that can be enjoyed socially but equally it can be enjoyed by playing alone and develops a healthy sense of competition whether that’s against yourself or by playing with others. Because it’s a largely outdoors sport, people that play golf reap multiple rewards by playing it such as improving their daily step count and getting access to Vitamin D which is unlocked by spending time outdoors. We hope that we’ve given you more positive reasons to play golf and perhaps this will go further by sharing with your friends or family that you think might enjoy playing golf.
